German Government Victims of Mass Cyber-Attack

German politicians, celebrities and journalists were left red faced after a major cyber-attack was carried out between the 1st and 28th of December, leading to sensitive information being published online.

Financial data, personal emails and contacts were spread on social media through Twitter in a calendar-like structure with information being released behind so called ‘doors’. The attack is said to have happened due to wrongful use of log-in information for cloud services, email accounts and social networks. However, no evidence has yet been found determining whether German parliamentary or government systems have been compromised. It is now believed the German government are seeking help from the U.S. National Security Agency to tackle the incident involving Mrs Merkel.

In 2017, 97% of UK businesses suffered a cyber-attack. Although this figure was down to 70% in 2018, this still means nearly 4,000,000 businesses suffered an attack in the last 12 months.
